The moment those lungs expand, the infant's entire cardiovascular system undergoes a violent structural overhaul. Inside the womb, blood bypassed the useless, fluid-filled lungs through two temporary bypasses: a flap between the heart's upper chambers called the foramen ovale, and a side-channel vessel called the ductus arteriosus. The moment air fills the lungs, vascular resistance in the respiratory system drops off a cliff, allowing a massive wave of blood to surge through the newly opened pulmonary vessels.
This sudden flood of blood causes a sharp spike in pressure on the left side of the heart. That pressure swing physically slams the flap of the foramen ovale shut like a door in a sudden draft, permanently separating the heart's left and right sides. Within seconds, smooth muscle surrounding the ductus arteriosus senses the sudden spike in blood oxygen and constricts tightly, sealing off the secondary bypass. The heart instantly transforms from a single parallel circuit into a two-sided sequential pump.
