It was once the grand central station for your body's survival plumbing. Right now, on the other side of that tiny dent in your abdomen, sit the leftover structural cables that kept you alive before you ever took a single breath.

In the womb, you didn't just have a simple rope attached to your skin. The umbilical cord penetrated deep into your belly, housing three main blood vessels: two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein. The vein pumped oxygen and nutrient-rich blood straight from the placenta into your tiny developing liver and heart. Meanwhile, the two arteries channeled waste-filled blood back out to the mother's system. There was even a fourth tube, called the urachus, which drained the fetal bladder straight out through the navel.

The moment you took your first gulp of air, your circulatory system underwent a violent, brilliant overhaul. Pressure changes in your chest forced blood into your newly inflated lungs for the first time. Almost instantly, the blood flowing through those internal umbilical vessels ground to a halt. Cut off from their supply, the internal tubes collapsed. But your body didn't absorb or dissolve them. Instead, it repurposed them through a process called fibrosis, turning blood-carrying pipes into dense, tough cords of connective tissue.
