The moment you took your first gulp of air, your circulatory system underwent a violent, brilliant overhaul. Pressure changes in your chest forced blood into your newly inflated lungs for the first time. Almost instantly, the blood flowing through those internal umbilical vessels ground to a halt. Cut off from their supply, the internal tubes collapsed. But your body didn't absorb or dissolve them. Instead, it repurposed them through a process called fibrosis, turning blood-carrying pipes into dense, tough cords of connective tissue.
The single umbilical vein hardened into the round ligament of the liver. It still sits inside you today, tethering your liver to your abdominal wall like an anchor line. The two umbilical arteries collapsed into the medial umbilical ligaments, which drape across the inside of your pelvic wall. The urachus shriveled up into the median umbilical ligament, holding the top of your bladder in place. You are literally held together on the inside by the ghosts of your unborn plumbing.
These internal ropes usually spend your entire life lying dormant, completely useless and forgotten. But they are not entirely dead. Under extreme medical stress, your old umbilical vein can wake back up. If a person develops severe liver disease, such as cirrhosis, scar tissue blocks normal blood flow through the liver. The pressure in the main portal vein spikes to dangerous levels. Desperate to relieve the build-up, blood seeks any alternative route it can find, and it often finds that ancient round ligament.
