Reindeer moms leave babies to freeze

It's a common misunderstanding of how reindeer raise their young: a reindeer calf enters the world on a patch of frozen snow, and its mother almost immediately keeps it moving. While some animals hide their young, reindeer mothers stay close to their calves, which are able to follow the herd within hours of birth to maintain protection and warmth. This bond starts the second they're born and keeps the newborn safe in the cold.

The mechanism behind this behavior is pure evolutionary efficiency. Reindeer calves are born precocial, meaning they're incredibly developed at birth. Within hours, they can stand, walk, and even run. Their bodies are designed to be mobile as quickly as possible. The mother's milk is incredibly rich, packed with fat and protein, allowing the calf to grow rapidly. The mother stays right there to make sure the calf gets what it needs while they both move with the group.

Reindeer calves rely on their ability to run and the protection of the herd to escape predators like wolves and bears. Because they don't have an instinct to hide or stay still, staying with the group is their best bet for survival. Reindeer mothers remain in constant contact with their calves, nursing frequently and keeping them integrated within the herd. This constant supervision ensures the calf isn't picked off by a predator while the mother grazes.

This immediate integration into the herd forces the calf to develop its senses and instinct for self-preservation while surrounded by hundreds of other reindeer. It learns to keep up and stay alert, relying on the safety of numbers. Once the calf has gained enough strength and speed, it becomes a permanent fixture in the nomadic cycle. It's a fast-paced beginning, but one that has allowed reindeer to thrive in some of the planet's most unforgiving conditions, ensuring the survival of the species by keeping the family together.
