It's a harrowing solo journey immediately after birth: a newborn kangaroo, called a joey, blind and barely developed, must climb unaided from the birth canal to its mother's pouch. This isn't a gentle nudge from mom or an easy slide; it's a vertical ascent over fur, driven purely by instinct, that takes hours and can cover a distance equivalent to a human crawling several football fields at birth.
Kangaroos, like all marsupials, give birth to extremely altricial young. Instead of a long gestation period inside the womb, their embryos emerge at a shockingly early stage of development, often weighing less than a gram and measuring only two centimeters long. They resemble miniature, translucent worms more than mammals, with only their front limbs developed enough for this crucial first climb.
The mother does not assist. She licks a path in her fur to provide a wet track, which helps the joey grip. The tiny creature uses its relatively strong forelimbs to pull itself hand-over-hand, inch by painful inch, towards the dark opening of the pouch. The journey is fraught with danger; a wrong turn or a fall means certain death. Only the most determined and fortunate make it.
Once inside the pouch, the joey immediately latches onto one of its mother's nipples, which then swells in its mouth, securing it firmly in place. This nipple provides a continuous supply of milk, uniquely formulated by the mother for this developmental stage. It will remain attached for several months, growing and developing within this mobile nursery, safe from the outside world.
