Antelopes pretend to die to trick predators

Can a creature simply switch off its life functions to trick a predator? The impala can enter a state of tonic immobility so profound that it appears clinically dead while being dragged by a cheetah's teeth.

This isn't a choice or a simple act of play-acting. It is a biological circuit breaker known as thanatosis. When the antelope's nervous system determines that neither fight nor flight can save it, the parasympathetic system takes over, dropping the heart rate and inducing muscular paralysis.

To a cheetah, the sudden lack of movement suggests the kill is complete. Cheetahs are built for speed, not endurance; they are often physically exhausted and overheating after a chase. If the prey stops struggling, the cat might loosen its grip to catch its breath or look around for scavengers like hyenas.

In those seconds of relaxation, the impala remains fully conscious. It is monitoring the predator's every movement while its body looks like a limp carcass. The moment the cheetah's jaws open even a fraction, the impala's system flips back into high-alert adrenaline mode.

The animal effectively explodes from a standstill to a full sprint in a fraction of a second. This leaves the predator confused, standing over the spot where its dinner was just lying. Some biologists have observed that this state can even reduce the sensation of pain, protecting the animal's psyche during what should be its final moments.

We still don't know if the chemical rush required to wake up from this death-faking state leaves permanent damage on the heart muscle.
