The short version
  • Watch what happens when killer whales flip sharks over. It's not pretty
  • Orcas don't just stumble upon this; they hunt like surgeons.
  • While most sharks never wake up from this trance, those that do carry a chemical memory of the event.

A Great White shark is the undisputed titan of the open ocean, yet it has a literal "off switch" that any orca can flip with a single nudge. By simply turning the shark upside down, the killer whale triggers tonic immobility, a state of total, catatonic paralysis.

The shark doesn't fight back or try to swim away. It simply goes limp, floating like a piece of driftwood. It is still conscious, but its muscles refuse to move, and its brain enters a trance that can last for up to fifteen minutes.

This happens because a shark’s sensory system is tuned to the extreme. When its world is inverted, the fluid in its balance organs sends a frantic surge of data to the brain. This sensory overload causes the shark's neurotransmitters to misfire, forcing its heart rate to drop and its muscles to relax into a state of involuntary surrender.
