A queen bee's absence means total chaos

If you take the queen out of a beehive, the workers don't just notice she's gone. Their bodies physically rewrite themselves. Within a few hours, the chemical signal that tells them they are "workers" begins to fade, and they start acting like rivals.

The queen constantly produces a scent called queen mandibular pheromone. It's an invisible glue that holds the hive's social ladder together. As bees groom her, they pick up this oil on their legs and antennae, passing it from bee to bee like a game of telephone.

This scent does something strange to the female worker bees: it chemically castrates them. As long as they smell the queen, their ovaries stay shriveled and inactive. They stay focused on cleaning, nursing, and foraging because they literally can't do anything else.

When the scent vanishes, the chemical suppression lifts. The workers' ovaries start to wake up. In a desperate attempt to keep the colony's genetics alive, these workers begin laying their own eggs.

But there’s a problem. Workers haven't mated with drones, so they can only lay unfertilized eggs. These eggs only hatch into males. These males, or drones, don't gather nectar, they don't clean, and they don't nurse the young.

The hive enters a slow-motion death spiral. Instead of a balanced team of foragers and builders, the colony becomes a nursery for thousands of males that consume resources without replacing them. The pantry goes empty because the workers are too distracted by their own biology to go outside.

The bees try to fix this by picking a young larva and drowning it in royal jelly to force it to become a new queen. But if the workers are already too far gone, or if there aren't any larvae at the right age, the replacement fails.

The colony doesn't vanish overnight, but it stops being a single organism. It turns into a collection of individuals living in a house that’s slowly running out of food.

If a beekeeper tries to drop a new queen in to save them, the workers might execute her immediately. They don't recognize her scent as "authority"—they see her as a foreign invader who smells wrong.
