You watch a twenty-second clip outlining a geopolitical conflict or a complex biological mechanism, receive a sudden hit of unearned clarity, and immediately swipe to the next stream of content. The algorithm gives you the precise neurochemical reward of a revelation without ever forcing your brain to perform the hard, metabolic labor of actually building a conceptual model.
This relentless cycle of frictionless pseudo-learning gradually starves your Need for Cognition. True curiosity requires an uncomfortable tax—a willingness to sit with frustrating confusion until the chaotic pieces of a system finally fit together. When you are constantly bathed in slick summaries that mimic the sensation of learning without demanding any effort, your brain stops generating the deep internal itch required to ask why. You become permanently satisfied with the illusion of knowing, floating on a sea of superficial facts while your capacity for deep inquiry slowly fades away.
