Leopards hunt dogs in our backyards

A Mumbai leopard views a Golden Retriever as a low-risk protein bar. In the shadows of India’s largest city, these big cats have bypassed their traditional forest prey to build a diet that is roughly 40% domestic dog.

This isn't a sign of starvation or habitat loss. It is a strategic pivot to a safer food source. While hunting wild animals in the forest carries the risk of injury from horns or tusks, a domestic dog offers a high caloric reward with almost zero chance of a lethal counter-attack.

These cats are thriving in one of the most crowded places on Earth by treating apartment balconies like canyon ledges. They track the specific timing of streetlights and human activity, slipping through gated communities while residents sleep just feet away on the other side of a sliding glass door.

Their presence creates a strange biological filter for the city. By preying on free-ranging dogs, leopards inadvertently act as a barrier against disease. Studies in the region suggest that in areas where leopards are active, the population of stray dogs drops significantly, which correlates with a decrease in dog bites and a reduced risk of rabies transmission to humans.

These predators aren't just visiting the suburbs; they have successfully colonised the gaps in human architecture. Researchers have tracked individual leopards that spend their entire lives within city limits, navigating alleyways and construction sites as if they were dense jungle corridors.

They have mastered the art of being invisible in plain sight. A cat that spends its night dragging a pet off a porch might spend its day resting in a small patch of tall grass within sight of a school bus stop, watching the morning commute.

The mystery isn't why the leopards are entering the city, but how they managed to move in permanently without most residents noticing. Even now, a leopard may be watching a street dog from the roof of a parking garage, waiting for the one moment the dog stops looking up.
