Snakes hunt things way smaller than you think

Your house looks like a giant rock to a snake. To a cold-blooded animal, your living room is just a temperature-controlled cave where the seasons never change.

Snakes don't enter homes to hunt humans; they follow the scent of pheromones left behind by rodents. If a mouse squeezed through a dime-sized hole in your foundation, a snake will follow that chemical trail directly into your kitchen.

Most unintended visitors are seeking a "thermal refuge." When the outside air gets too hot, the cool draft from your air conditioner feels like a life-saving oasis. When it gets too cold, the heat radiating from your water heater or refrigerator motor acts like a heating pad.

They don't need an open door to get in. A copperhead or a garter snake can compress its ribs until its body is as thin as a blade of grass, allowing it to slide through the gap under a weather strip or into a dryer vent.

Once inside, they usually head for the dark. A snake's vision is tuned to movement, so they feel safest in the pitch-black silence behind your washing machine or inside your walls.

Basements are particularly attractive because they mimic the humidity of a damp forest floor. To a snake, a damp crawl space is the perfect place to shed its skin without the risk of the old scales getting stuck.

If you find one, the most effective tool is a simple push broom. Gently sweeping the snake toward an open door is usually enough to convince it that the "rock" is no longer hospitable.

Strangely, many snakes found in suburban attics didn't crawl up the stairs; they climbed the rough brick exterior or used overhanging tree branches to drop onto the roof.

Even after a snake is removed, the scent of its skin can linger in your insulation for years, signaling to other snakes that your home is a proven sanctuary.
