Here's the mechanism: quicksand is simply a mixture of sand, clay, and water, but in a specific ratio that makes it appear solid until disturbed. When pressure is applied, like a foot stepping on it, the sand grains separate and the mixture transforms into a liquid, creating enough buoyancy to prevent one from completely sinking. However, the true trap lies in its density. Quicksand is denser than the human body, so you'll initially float. But movement causes the sand grains to lock up and de-liquefy, creating a vacuum effect. Each attempt to pull your leg out increases the suction and makes the quicksand denser and stickier around your trapped limb.
