A leopard can haul a carcass twice its own weight up a vertical trunk using nothing but the friction of its retractable claws and the explosive power of its shoulder muscles. For a warthog watching from the grass below, this verticality is a death sentence for its offspring.
Warthogs are horizontal specialists, built like armored battering rams with low centers of gravity meant for rooting and charging. Their rigid spines and heavy, front-loaded skulls make them formidable opponents on level ground, but these same physical constraints make climbing an anatomical impossibility.
Leopards exploit this evolutionary gap by treating trees as high-altitude larders. Once a leopard secures a piglet, it doesn't stay to fight the mother's razor-sharp tusks; it ascends. Because warthogs lack the grip-and-pull mechanics required for climbing, they are forced to stand at the base of the tree, sometimes for hours, watching their young being consumed just ten feet above their heads.
