A koala could leave its prints at a crime scene and investigators might spend weeks looking for a human suspect. Their fingertips are covered in ridges, loops, and whorls that appear identical to our own.
This is a bizarre case of convergent evolution. Humans and koalas are separated by 70 million years of evolutionary history, and our closest primate relatives, like chimpanzees, have much different print patterns. Yet, the koala developed these ridges independently, likely to improve their grip while climbing eucalyptus trees.
Even under an electron microscope, distinguishing a koala print from a human one is notoriously difficult. The patterns are unique to each individual koala, just as they are for humans. No two koalas have the same set of prints.
