Plants send distress signals through fungal networks

A tomato plant can tell its neighbor that a caterpillar is coming without ever touching it. The warning travels through a subterranean mesh of living thread that acts like a biological fiber-optic cable.

This isn't a choice or a conversation; it is a chemical chain reaction. When a pest bites a leaf, the plant produces specific defense chemicals that leak into the soil through its roots. Fungal filaments called mycelia, which are already fused to those roots, pick up these compounds and transport them to the root systems of every other plant in the grid.

Within hours, the neighboring plants—which haven't been touched by a single bug—start pumping out bitter toxins to make their leaves unpalatable. The fungus isn't doing this as a favor. It acts as a neutral courier, maintaining the health of the entire forest to ensure its own steady supply of sugar from the surviving trees.

The network is so efficient that it doesn't care about species. A Douglas fir can inadvertently prime the defenses of a neighboring birch tree. However, this open-source data stream creates a massive security flaw. Some orchids have evolved to hack the system, plugging into the mycelia to steal nutrients from the trees without giving anything back.

These "hackers" don't even bother with photosynthesis. They live in total darkness, disguised as part of the network, siphoning off the forest’s collective energy like a silent parasite on a power grid.

In some cases, the network is used for chemical warfare rather than defense. Certain trees, like the Black Walnut, use the fungal pathways to dump toxic juglone into the soil, specifically targeting the roots of competitors to clear out the neighborhood.

While we see a forest as a collection of individual trees, the soil sees a single, massive, shifting organism where the line between one plant and another doesn't actually exist. But if the fungi are the ones controlling the flow of every nutrient and signal, it raises the question of who is really in charge of the forest: the trees standing in the light, or the mold ruling the dark.
