Coconuts burst into flames to kill bugs

A torch to the crown of a living tree sounds like arson, but for a coconut palm, it is a life-saving surgery. Farmers in tropical regions intentionally set the leafy tops of their palms on fire to stop the Rhinoceros Beetle from eating the tree from the inside out.

Fire clears the dense, fibrous debris where these heavy-armored pests hide and breed. The intense heat kills the beetle larvae instantly, yet the palm survives because its growing point, the heart, is insulated by layers of moist tissue that act like a natural firewalls.

While a typical hardwood tree would die if its canopy were incinerated, the coconut palm is technically a woody monocot, more closely related to grass than an oak. Its vascular system isn't a single ring under the bark, but thousands of individual straw-like vessels scattered throughout the trunk.

This structural quirk means the tree can lose its entire outer layer of leaves to a flash fire and still pump water to the top. Within weeks of the charring, new green fronds push through the blackened stump like a slow-motion jack-in-the-box.

The smoke itself plays a secondary role, acting as a chemical deterrent that confuses the scent receptors of incoming insects. By the time the next generation of beetles arrives, the tree has already begun to reset its internal clock.

Curiously, the heat from these controlled burns can actually trigger a hormonal surge in the palm, sometimes resulting in a larger yield of fruit than trees that were never set ablaze. Some palm species have evolved such a tight relationship with fire that their seeds will only germinate after the soil has been scorched by a passing flame.
