Forget everything you think you know about waves. A typical ocean wave is a surface phenomenon, a ripple of energy passing through the water, but the water itself doesn't travel far. A tsunami, however, is an entirely different beast. It's not a wave in the classic sense; it's more like a moving flood, an immense volume of water displaced and set in motion by a sudden, powerful underwater event.

This colossal displacement usually happens when an earthquake thrusts a section of the seafloor upward or downward. The energy released shoves the entire water column, from the ocean floor to the surface, causing a massive bulge. This entire body of water begins to travel, not just the surface. In the deep ocean, a tsunami might only be a foot high, making it imperceptible to ships, but it's moving at jet-plane speeds—sometimes over 500 miles per hour.

As this fast-moving, relatively short wave reaches shallower coastal waters, the leading edge slows down due to friction with the seabed. But the trailing water behind it continues to push forward at its original speed, causing the wave to compress and pile up. This isn't just the crest growing taller; it's the entire water column rising, drawing water from the coast in a phenomenon known as a drawdown, sometimes exposing miles of seabed before the true horror arrives.
