It took 14 million liters of water to fill this concrete abyss, which is filtered every six hours through volcanic rock. The engineering is so precise that the facility doubles as the region’s largest underwater film studio, complete with 56 cameras that track your every movement from a central control room.

The deeper you go, the more the "city" decays. Shallow levels feature intact luxury apartments, but the bottom reaches resemble a world reclaimed by time, filled with crumbling masonry and shadows. It is a meticulously maintained disaster zone designed for tourists.

If you happen to get the bends while exploring the kitchen, the facility houses a hyperbaric chamber that can treat ten people at once. But even with the best tech, there is one strict rule: you are forbidden from visiting the top of the Burj Khalifa for at least 24 hours after you surface.
