Sperm whales: the loudest animal alive

Can a sound be so loud that it actually vibrates a human body to death? The sperm whale produces a rhythmic clicking that reaches 230 decibels—an intensity that would easily rupture a person’s eardrums and potentially shatter their internal organs. For context, a Saturn V rocket launch registers at roughly 200 decibels.

This sound doesn't come from a throat or lungs. Instead, the whale uses a massive, oil-filled casing in its forehead called the spermaceti organ. By forcing air through 'monkeys muzzles' (flaps of skin inside the nasal passage), the whale bounces sound off a mirror-like air sac at the back of its skull. The sound reflects forward, passing through the oil to focus into a beam of acoustic energy that can travel for hundreds of miles.

These clicks are precision tools for hunting in total darkness. A sperm whale can dive nearly 2,000 meters down, where the pressure is 200 times that of the surface, to hunt giant squid. Because the water is pitch black, the whale uses its sound like a flashlight, seeing the world through the echoes that bounce off its prey.

When they aren't hunting, these giants rest in a way that looks like a glitch in the ocean. They bob perfectly still in a vertical position, noses pointing toward the surface, looking like massive, motionless pillars. They sleep for only about ten to fifteen minutes at a time, making them one of the least sleep-dependent mammals on Earth.

Their communication is equally strange. Groups of whales, known as clans, develop distinct 'codas'—rhythmic patterns of clicks that function as regional dialects. A whale from the Caribbean won't use the same rhythm as one from the Pacific, and they generally only socialize with those who speak their specific acoustic language.

Despite their power, these animals have a throat so narrow they could never swallow a human. Their diet is almost exclusively squid, yet their intestines produce ambergris, a waxy substance used in high-end perfumes that can be worth more than its weight in gold.
