If you pick up a limestone rock at the peak of Mount Everest, you are holding the remains of sea creatures that died on an ancient ocean floor. Almost every square inch of dry land beneath our boots was submerged at some point in planetary history. Plate tectonics acts like an relentless churn, dragging continents beneath sea level, flooding interior plains with shallow seas, and shoving wet ocean floors into sky-scraping mountain ranges. Yet, against all chaotic odds, a few rare patches of planetary crust have stayed dry since the dawn of complex geology.

These ancient survivors are known as cratons, specifically the thick, undisturbed cores of continents like the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia and the Kaapvaal Craton in South Africa. Formed around 3.5 billion years ago, these landmasses are supported by massive, buoyant roots of granite-like rock that extend deep into Earth’s mantle. While dense ocean crust acts like a conveyor belt that sinks into the mantle and recycles itself every 200 million years, these light continental roots floated like giant corks. They were simply too thick and buoyant to be dragged down.

The surprising realization is not just that these cratons survived, but that continuous sections of them never drowned. For over three billion years, as supercontinents assembled, broke apart, and plunged beneath rising planetary sea levels, parts of the Pilbara remained stubbornly poked above the waves. They are Earth’s primordial islands, standing as open land long before plants, animals, or even an oxygen-rich atmosphere existed.
