On Earth, lakes are typically defined by what they don't have: a direct connection to the ocean. But the assumption that they're filled with water is often wrong. Take the Pitch Lake in Trinidad, for example. It's a vast natural asphalt lake, not a liquid one. Imagine a giant bathtub filled with sticky, viscous tar, bubbling from the depths of the Earth. It's so large and deep that it's been actively mined for centuries, providing asphalt for roads and roofs worldwide.

Then there's Lake Natron in Tanzania, which looks like a serene, blood-red body of water. But this isn't some artistic filter. Its extreme alkalinity and high salt content are so caustic that they can calcify animals, turning them into eerie, natural mummies. The vibrant color comes from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in conditions lethal to most other life. Wading into this lake would be a truly agonizing experience.

The mechanism behind these non-water lakes often involves unique geological conditions. The Pitch Lake formed where two tectonic plates meet, allowing crude oil to seep up from deep underground. Volatile components evaporated, leaving behind the heavy asphalt. For Lake Natron, volcanic activity in the Great Rift Valley creates sodium carbonate deposits that leach into the water, making it extremely alkaline. Evaporation in the hot climate then concentrates the salts, creating its deadly chemical cocktail.
