Florida's tornadoes sneak inland

When you picture a tornado, you probably imagine the vast, flat expanse of the American Midwest. But Florida, a state synonymous with tourism and tropical weather, has a higher frequency of tornadoes per 10,000 square miles than the infamous Tornado Alley. This isn't just a quirky statistic; it's a critical difference in how and why these destructive storms form.

Most Floridian tornadoes are born from waterspouts—tornadoes that form over water—or are spawned by the state's frequent thunderstorms and hurricanes. Unlike the powerful supercells that typically produce large, long-lived tornadoes in the Great Plains, Florida's tornadoes tend to be weaker, shorter-lived, and usually occur during daylight hours. This might sound less threatening, but it doesn't make them less dangerous.

The real peril in Florida's tornado activity comes from its high population density. A weaker tornado passing through a heavily populated residential area can cause far more damage and casualties than a stronger one tearing across an empty field. The sheer volume of people and infrastructure packed into the Sunshine State means even a relatively small twister can have devastating consequences.
