Ancient 'pine cones' hide primeval seeds

Dinosaurs used to roam a world where towering plants bore fruit unlike anything we see today. That's the world the cycad sprung from. What looks like a giant, oddly-scaled pineapple or a prehistoric pine cone is actually a highly evolved reproductive structure, home to some of the largest seeds on Earth. These ancient plants, often mistaken for palms or ferns, have been around for over 280 million years, predating flowering plants and thriving through multiple mass extinctions.

The real surprise? These are not pine cones at all. Pine cones are the reproductive structures of conifers, a different group of plants entirely. Cycad cones are unique, containing massive, often brightly colored seeds. Some cycad seeds can be as large as an avocado pit, packed with nutrients for the future plant. The size and structure of these cones attract specialized pollinators, such as specific beetle species that have co-evolved with cycads for millions of years, or even help the plant resist being eaten by giant herbivores like sauropods.

While some cycads produce small, round cones, others, like certain species of *Encephalartos*, can boast cones weighing over 90 pounds and reaching several feet in length. These colossal structures are not just for show; they protect the precious seeds within, often for months or even years. When mature, the cones may break open or even fall apart, releasing their heavy cargo. Some cycads rely on gravity or animals to disperse their seeds, which are often covered in a fleshy, nutrient-rich layer to entice scavengers.

Despite their ancient lineage and formidable appearance, cycads are surprisingly vulnerable. Many species are critically endangered, facing threats from habitat loss and poaching. Their slow growth rate and specialized reproductive cycles make them difficult to conserve. Studying these 'living fossils' gives scientists a direct window into Earth's deep past, offering clues about ancient ecosystems and the evolution of plant life. They remind us that some of the most extraordinary designs in nature have stood the test of time, quietly perfecting their survival strategies across eons.

Even today, some cycads have an unusual trick up their sleeves: they produce heat. During reproduction, certain male cycad cones can generate significant warmth, sometimes 10-15°C above ambient temperature. This heat helps to volatilize and disperse the cone's scent, a powerful attractant for their specialized insect pollinators. This ancient adaptation ensures the continuation of a lineage that has outlasted countless other life forms, a silent mark of the power of slow, persistent evolution.
