If you rescue a struggling deer from a fence, you might actually be the one who kills it. Even if you free it without a scratch, the animal can drop dead two weeks later because its own muscles have turned into poison.
This biological self-destruction is called capture myopathy. It happens when the intense terror of being handled by humans triggers a metabolic meltdown so severe that the animal literally dissolves from the inside out.
When a wild animal panics, its body dumps a massive, sustained load of adrenaline into the bloodstream. In a natural hunt, this lasts seconds; during a rescue, it can last for hours. The muscles work so hard to escape that they burn through every drop of oxygen, producing a tidal wave of lactic acid that the liver cannot process.
The blood becomes an acidic slurry. This acidity burns through the walls of muscle cells, causing them to rupture and leak a protein called myoglobin into the blood. Myoglobin is supposed to store oxygen in muscle tissue, but once it enters the bloodstream, it turns toxic.
As the animal breathes, these proteins travel straight to the kidneys. The kidneys aren't built to filter these jagged, heavy molecules, so they simply clog up and shut down. The animal might walk away, rejoin its herd, and appear fine, while its internal organs are silently suffocating.
In some cases, the damage is even more direct. The muscles around the heart can become so scarred by the stress that they turn pale and stiff, resembling cooked chicken. The heart eventually just stops mid-beat, days after the "rescue" is over.
Conservationists now have to treat every rescue like a bomb disposal. They use dark hoods, specialized cooling blankets, and even beta-blockers to trick the animal’s nervous system into staying calm. If they fail to manage the fear, the animal’s own survival instincts become a lethal overdose.
The strangest part is that the strongest, most fit animals are often the most at risk. Their powerful muscles are capable of generating so much force and heat that they cook their own internal organs before the rescue team even finishes untying them.
