Why black mambas bite twice

If you find yourself staring down a black mamba, you aren't actually looking at a black snake. The animal is olive-gray; it gets its name because the inside of its mouth is the color of a charred coal.

When that mouth opens, it releases a chemical cocktail that treats the human body like a failing power grid. The mamba's venom is a potent neurotoxic cocktail that shuts down the nervous system, leading to rapid respiratory failure.

The first ingredient is a neurotoxin that acts like a cellular scissor, snipping the wires between your brain and your muscles. Within minutes, your eyelids droop and your tongue thickens. Your lungs eventually forget how to pull in air because the signal to breathe simply stops arriving.

While you are struggling to breathe, the venom continues to compromise the body's communication lines. It is a biological fail-safe; the rapid onset of paralysis ensures the prey cannot escape.

Speed is the mamba's real vanity project. It can move at speeds up to 11 miles per hour in short bursts, making it one of the fastest snakes in the world, and it doesn't just bite once. It strikes in a rapid-fire blur, injecting enough venom in a single bite to kill at least 10 grown men.

Without antivenom, the mortality rate is exceptionally high, often reaching near-total lethality depending on the amount of venom injected. The transition from a healthy person to a corpse can take as little as 20 minutes, a timeline so aggressive that local legends often claim the snake can outrun a horse.

Even more unsettling is the mamba's precision. When threatened, it strikes repeatedly, and because of its length, it can strike at a higher range than many other snakes, often hitting the upper body.

The strangest part of the mamba's lethality is that it's actually a shy, reclusive creature that would rather hide in a termite mound than fight. It only turns into a "biological weapon" when it feels it has no other choice, leaving humans to wonder why nature bothered to give a timid animal enough power to shut down a person's lungs in seconds.
