These are leafcutter ants, and they don't eat leaves. Instead, they're collecting vegetation to feed their real food source: a specialized fungus. These ants have perfected a form of agriculture millions of years before humans even existed, creating complex fungal gardens in their underground colonies.

The mechanism is astounding. Tens of millions of years ago, some ancestral ant discovered a fungal species it could cultivate for food. Over time, this fungus evolved to become entirely dependent on the ants for survival, and the ants, in turn, became dependent on the fungus. Leafcutter ants meticulously harvest fresh plant material, chew it into a pulp, and then inoculate it with fragments of their fungal crop. This provides the ideal compost for the fungus to grow, which the ants then 'harvest' and consume.

But it's not just about farming; it's about advanced agriculture. The ants must keep their gardens free from pests and competing fungi. They do this by applying antimicrobial secretions from their bodies, acting as natural pesticides. The colony even has specialized ant castes, each with a specific role: large 'soldiers' protect the foraging lines, 'foragers' cut and carry leaves, and tiny 'minims' tend to the delicate fungal garden, weeding out contaminants and tending to the growing mycelium. This division of labor is crucial for the colony's success, allowing them to manage gardens that can span many cubic meters.
