Because a child's head is at the exact same height as a standing dog's mouth, a simple "warning snap" intended for a shoulder ends up hitting a cheek or an eye.

The most dangerous room in the house is often the kitchen during dinner. Dogs are hardwired for resource guarding, an evolutionary leftover from when losing a scrap of meat meant starvation. A toddler wandering toward a food bowl isn't seen as a family member; they are a competitor for survival resources.

Even the wagging tail can be a trap. A stiff, fast-twitching tail isn't a sign of joy—it's a sign of high arousal and readiness to spring. We've spent 15,000 years breeding dogs to live with us, yet we still haven't learned to read the basic alphabet of their movements.

Dogs actually find their owners' scent deeply comforting, but they can 'catch' stress from their humans, leading to a synchronization of cortisol levels that might make a dog more reactive. This means the "loyal" family protector is actually the one most likely to snap under the pressure of a misunderstood hug.
