Every February, for a fleeting few moments, Yosemite National Park's Horsetail Fall transforms into what looks like a fiery cascade. This isn't an optical illusion or a trick of the light in the common sense, but a precise interaction between geology, water flow, and the setting sun. The fall, normally quite modest, must have enough water from winter snowmelt, and the sky must be perfectly clear at sunset.
The mechanism behind this spectacle is called Rayleigh scattering, the same phenomenon that makes the sky blue. When the sun dips to a specific angle in the western sky, its light hits the eastern face of El Capitan, illuminating Horsetail Fall from behind. The water droplets in the fall act like tiny prisms, scattering the blue light and allowing the longer, warmer wavelengths — yellows, oranges, and reds — to pass through directly. As these intense colors reflect off the granite and through the mist, the waterfall appears to glow.
This isn't a guaranteed event; it requires precise conditions. The waterfall itself needs sufficient water, typically from melted snowpack, which means a colder, snowier winter often leads to a more dramatic "firefall." If there's too little water, the effect is muted. If there are clouds or haze, the sun's rays are blocked, and the magic simply doesn't happen. Park rangers even used to create actual "firefalls" by pushing burning embers over the cliff, a practice discontinued in 1968 due to environmental concerns.
