A Thoroughbred racehorse, mid-stride, can beat 240 times a minute, circulating an astonishing 190 liters. This isn't just about big muscle; it's about a unique biological design that pushes the limits of cardiovascular performance, making them the fastest creatures on four legs over distance.

The secret isn't just the sheer size of the heart, which can be up to three times larger than an average horse's. Thoroughbreds possess a genetic mutation, often called the 'speed gene,' that influences the production of a particular protein, myostatin. This protein typically limits muscle growth. With this gene variant, myostatin activity is reduced, allowing for greater muscle mass, particularly the fast-twitch fibers essential for explosive speed. But raw muscle is useless without an incredible fuel delivery system.

That system is built around a super-efficient cardiovascular network. Their massive hearts not only pump huge volumes of blood but do so with incredible efficiency, pushing oxygen-rich blood to those powerful muscles at a rate that allows for sustained, high-speed exertion. Their lungs are also disproportionately large, capable of processing vast amounts of air to keep the blood oxygenated. This combination means they can convert energy into motion with unparalleled biological intensity, briefly becoming pure, unrestrained kinetic power.
