The pelican's secret is the gular sac. It's not a permanent bag; it's a piece of highly elastic skin connected to two long, flexible jawbones. When the bird opens its mouth, those bones actually bow outward, turning the lower jaw into a massive, rigid frame for a net.
The American White Pelican uses this like a vacuum. When it targets a fish—or a smaller bird—it doesn't chew. It can't. Pelicans don't have teeth. Instead, they use gravity and muscle contractions. If they catch something large and feisty, like a duckling, they will hold it in their pouch and use the weight of the water to help subdue the animal before straining and swallowing.
