When a butterfly lands on a flower, it isn't just resting; it is using its feet to check the menu. They have chemoreceptors on their tarsi—the bottom of their legs—that are 200 times more sensitive to sugar than the human tongue.

By drumming their legs on a leaf, they can sense whether the plant contains the specific chemicals their caterpillars need to survive. If the "taste" is wrong, they fly away instantly without tasting the nectar.

This setup allows them to identify a food source at a full sprint. They don't have a mouth in the traditional sense, so they rely on these leg sensors to trigger the unrolling of their straw-like proboscis.

Interestingly, female butterflies are even more sensitive than males. They use their feet to detect toxins in plants, ensuring they don't lay their eggs on a leaf that will poison their offspring.
